Race Tactics

The goal of this section of the website is to help our athletes learn from other people’s races. It can be difficult for really fast high school runners to get good experience in tactical races - they are usually pretty far out in front of the pack… or otherwise in control of the outcome.

Video #1: Ryan Farrell - Nike Outdoor HS Nationals 800m Championship at the University of Oregon.

Ryan is our high school 800m record holder for CTC at 1:50.58. This is his race at Nike Outdoor Nationals at the University of Oregon.

Note: Some may think it is okay to run a tactical race at a national Championship meet - NOT HERE. As you watch the video, please keep in mind that Ryan was in the 5th and fastest heat for this race with a few guys capable of 1:49 times. The 4th heat (slower) runners won the event by running 1:50s - 1:51 a few moments before this race started. The 4th heat did not slow their heat into a tactical race like the faster guys did.
